Review: Lucky Shot by Rebecca Jenshak

✨ Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

⚠️ Trigger Warnings

  1. Mentions of past breakup and heartbreak
  2. Writer’s block / career struggles
  3. Family health concerns (Nick’s dad’s heart attack)

💡 The Premise

Rebecca Jenshak opens her Moonshot Hockey series with a romance that feels both meta and swoony. Ruby Madison is a bestselling paranormal author whose career has taken a downturn. When her agent digs up an old sports romance manuscript and pitches it to a publisher, Ruby suddenly finds herself rewriting the book—with one small change: the sport must switch from baseball to hockey.

To make it work, Ruby heads to Montana to research the game, where she meets Nick Galaxy, a grumpy single dad hockey star recovering from an injury. What she doesn’t expect? That he’ll be the very “hockey expert” she’s supposed to learn from. Cue the sparks, the banter, and the unexpected summer romance.

💕 What I Loved

  1. Ruby’s chaotic charm – Her inner monologues and clumsy optimism made me laugh out loud more than once.
  2. Grumpy x sunshine energy – Nick’s broody single dad vibes paired perfectly with Ruby’s bubbly, messy confidence.
  3. The setting – Moonshot Lake was cozy and picturesque, the perfect backdrop for a “hot girl summer” romance.
  4. Family layers – Nick’s bond with his son Aidan and his dad added warmth and heart to the story.

🤔 What Fell Short

  1. Some pacing lulls in Ruby’s self-doubt chapters slowed things down a bit.
  2. Aidan is adorable, but I wanted even more of his presence woven into the romance.

🌟 Final Thoughts

Lucky Shot is witty, heartfelt, and the perfect start to Rebecca Jenshak’s Moonshot Hockey series. If you love:

  1. Sports romance (without needing to be a hockey expert)
  2. Banter-filled grumpy x sunshine tropes
  3. Cozy lake-town vibes
  4. A heroine who’s delightfully chaotic

…then this one belongs on your TBR. Jenshak blends humor, heart, and swoon-worthy romance in a way that leaves you rooting for Ruby and Nick—and maybe for your own lucky shot, too.
